Two Prominent District 46 Toastmasters Tell Their Success Stories

[Amelia Abad and Mark LaVergne are interviewed as they speak about their early experiences in Toastmasters and preview the upcoming Fall 2009 Conference]

The Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero once said “A good orator is pointed and impassioned.” And while Cicero is widely considered one of Rome’s greatest speakers and prose stylists, for others the ability to express oneself eloquently does not come so easily. Fortunately, there is an organization that can help.

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has been assisting its members improve their ability to speak competently and effectively in front of an audience by building communication and leadership skills. The District 46 Toastmasters will be holding their annual fall conference next month in Queens, a daylong series of workshops and discussions with experts who will give tips on personal and career growth.

Northern Brookhaven Celebrates 50-Year Anniversary

Since 2007 the club has been participating in all contests with members getting to the division level 5 times and on 3 of those occasions making it to the District Contests. The club has also achieved a perfect 10 ranking in the DCP programs for the past two years.

VP of Public Relations Brian Cohen states: “What is most exciting is seeing the club’s membership base grow from a low of 3 (2006) to our current membership level of 28.” Northern Brookhaven is excited about achieving many more milestones as they enter their second half century as a club.

SEC Roughrider Member on Rachel Ray Show

On March 3, Micheline Cummings, a member of SEC Roughrider club, appeared on the daytime show hosted by Rachael Ray, the perky TV chef who first gained notoriety with her Food Network programs. Micheline (“It’s pronounced like the tire company”) runs her own custom cake shop, but she wasn’t on Ray’s show because the two share common culinary ground. Her presence was tied to a fear of public speaking – and how to overcome it.

So, naturally, Toastmasters played a starring role.
